Pow Pow Pow !!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!
As i was putting together a story about !!! that’s running in tomorrow’s paper, timed to the release of their new album “Strange Weather, Isn’t It?” i put on the album i first heard by them, “Louden Up Now” out in 2004 and the album still makes me want to dance on the subway platform (and I did tonight when no one was looking, being over-caffeinated and with plenty of lag-time before the next R train). I know lead singer Nic Offer’s singing style and obvious lyrics are a turnoff for a lot of people, but as my 7th grade taste for Billy Corgan will testify, that’s rarely stopped me.
I just love that these guys don’t give a fuck. I love that they’re screaming and dancing and being assholes just to do it. No literary references, do purposefully oblique verses to make them seem more thoughtful. It’s cathartic, base-level madness. As close as I’ll ever get to appreciating metal.
Last week at punk metal kareoke I did Cherry Bomb after a few drinks. They had a live backing band, so I got to pretend for 2 minutes that I was in a band. Screaming, fist-pumping and kicking at people from a stage felt really amazing. Is that so wrong? maybe I just need to buy a copy of Rock Band or something. Hello? Is this thing on?
