i hate twilight

Damn you, Twilight.

Why must you make me feel like a sellout for loving your lame-o movie’s soundtrack? The album for ‘New Moon’ comes with a handful of rare goodies that make it irresistible no matter how much of a snob you might be for lovelorn vampire tween fare. A collaboration between Bon Iver and St. Vincent?? A rare track from Grizzly Bear?! The first Thom Yorke single we’ve seen in a few years? Damn you for getting your marketing data-laden fingers into my little brain.

The first movie, which was famously produced on the cheap, boasted of tracks from Linkin Park and Paramore. Now they’ve clearly figured out that they can get a prettier date to the prom. What can we expect for the next one? A collaboration between Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed? You people should be off limits to this kind of material, you blood suckers of culture.

People BITE other people over this shit. For real. They make pillowcases of Rob Pattinson’s FACE. UNDERWEAR with his face on it! I feel like this is NKOTB all over again and yet I am becoming a reluctant participant in all of it about 15 years after I was donning a saucer-sized pin with Jordan’s face on it.

But on the flipside, should we be happy that these groups are getting their moment to be recognized? I don’t even care if people don’t ‘get it.’ I don’t think i get the music either. I don’t pay much attention to the lyrics and when I do, they don’t make sense. But it’s a gut reaction, so I’m sure some 11 year old will make their parents buy them this cd and they’ll sit in their bedroom and fantasize and listen to Thom Yorke’s song and wonder, who is this guy? Are all of his songs so romantic and sad? I must hear more. That’s not entirely bad is it?

What’s the need for the snobbery really. Some of us have a compulsion to say, this is mine, not yours. You won’t respect it. You won’t love it as truly as I do. The need to say that is a need to define oneself and shouldn’t we all have a better handle on that by now anyway?
