Now I know why they throw panties at Tom Jones

This weekend I was lucky enough to discover the wonder of a live performance by Tom Jones. Ladies, he can work it. I’d had this DVD collection of “This Is Tom Jones” kicking around my house for three years. He had his own variety hour from 1969 to 1971 which featured a strange mix of terrible comedy sketches, guest music artists ranging from Glen Campbell to, oddly, Janis Joplin ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXlP7PyaHdA ) strange things with famous actors like Anne Bancroft ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogdQeMCHXYE ) and of course, most importantly, a few notable numbers with the man himself.

Now, I always thought he was a bit corny - never understood the charm - until I got to see what his live performances are really like. And basically, he was a younger, hipper Elvis for the late 60s what with the pelvis shaking, the kisses to a few girls in the audience and wiping his sweaty face with a hankie an audience member offered him and then handing it back to her, knowing that this treasured sweaty hankie would never be washed again.

But what I really love is how he does this freak out that reminds me of myself after oh, a V&T or two and a good song happens to come on. All of this to say that you need to watch this video, especially at the 1:16 mark. To use a phrase I hate, “hilarity ensues.”
